Runway Submissions Due April 20th – What will you create?

The Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show garment submission deadline is one month away! Designers, now is the time to start fabricating that unique creation you’ve been pondering. You may be still collecting trash, but get started!

3 EASY STEPS to be considered for the 11th Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show on Saturday, May 20th…

Complete the submission process by the deadline << April 20th >>

  1. Complete the Runway Submission Form
  2. Pay Submission Fee
  3. Send 3 photos of your design

GARMENTS SHOULD LIFT UP THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:.

  • Mission – Is your garment furthering the Rubbish Renewed Mission?  Does the description of your garment and piece communicate:  Transforming trash, inspiring community for a sustainable earth
  • Materials – Does your garment fit the trash fashion and/or re-fashion definitions?  Does your garment transform trash into fashion? Priority given to garments that truly keep items out of the landfill.
  • Design – Does your garment communicate a coherence in design, an innovative technique, unique aesthetics, and creative expression?
  • Construction – Do you demonstrate quality in construction?  Does your construction quality inspire long-term use?

Your garment doesn’t have to be complete to submit, but the further along you are, the easier it is for the jury to recognize your vision in your photos and artist renderings.

New Venue – The Pavilion!

The cats out of the bag – Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show will transform the Bend Pavilion! A new chapter. A new wave.

Rubbish Renewed has made the rounds of event venues in Bend. Our first 3 years, starting in 2010, we celebrated at the Century Center. They provided the perfect venue – huge open space, an energizing vibe, and few rules. That was old Bend. In 2013, the Century Center indoor venue was divided and repurposed into small businesses. The huge space gone, Rubbish Renewed set out to find another home.

Bend is lacking in large, indoor, open event venues. After countless failures we finally procured the Armory Gym down near the Old Mill. The location was ideal, close for walking, and dedicated parking. The Gym atmosphere, however, was hard to transform, and the military systems challenging to negotiate.

In 2015 we moved again and made our home for 5 years by converting the Midtown Ballroom into a mesmerizing setting. Look forward to a post highlighting the Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show, years 6-10.

After 2 years of pandemic closures, it’s time for a Rubbish Renewed Revival! A huge, diverse space, open to the environment, brings opportunities . . . the Pavilion!

As individual community members we have a responsibility to think about our choices and take actions to minimize our impact on the earth, but it is exponentially important for businesses to do the same. Poor waste management contributes to climate change, air pollution, and directly affects ecosystems and species. Reducing the carbon footprint of their products, creating initiatives to help employees reduce their impact, producing a climate conscious workplace, are all ways that businesses can step up their sustainability.

That’s why we love the Rubbish Renewed Business Challenge! We get to highlight the sustainable work of local businesses who take their impact seriously.

Each year a group of businesses come together to celebrate sustainability, support Realms education, and compete for the Coveted Trash Trophy.

We’re Back! Date Announced

New Season . . . Spring . . . Saturday, May 20th 2023!

The revival of Rubbish Renewed creates opportunities. One of these inspired a new season, Spring. Spring offers fresh venue ideas, novel designs, and more time for motivated student and adult designers to conceptualize and construct.

The design, creation, and application are a months-long process for designers to engage in and learn about waste, personal actions, design, creation skills, and determination, culminating in the professional feel of the show!

Rubbish Renewed has developed into a showcase for talented community artists. Many designers submit year after year inspired to up their game in sustainability, material manipulation, and style each event. Pieces tell a variety of stories like the challenges of medical waste, excessive packaging from our mail order and coffee on-the-go obsessions, and how to transform discards into truly wearable art.

We all know the impact of too much trash – Air pollution, climate change, soil and water contamination… but it’s easy to ignore when it’s whisked away from our homes each week and hidden from view of our daily lives.

Our student designers elevate these issues to the forefront of their creativity and learning, then take the mantle, using Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show as a platform, to inspire and educate the themselves and the rest of us. It’s time for us to listen!

Refresh and Re-imagine

We’re back! Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show, one of the most forward thinking, eco-friendly, fundraising events to witness, is on track for a Spring Event. It did take another year, but this Rubbish Renewed Revival gives us the opportunity to refresh and re-imagine for the best show ever!

There is a lot of work ahead to ready this event, but we are on our way!

Thank You Bend!

I spend most of the evening behind the curtain. I get to feel the nerves of the young models before they take their first step, sending them onto the runway. And about a minute later, I get to experience their exhilaration when they step behind the curtain again. My favorite moment Saturday night was when 4th grade designer/model, Laila, supported each nervous model (students and adults alike) behind her, “it’s like a roller coaster. Before you go, you are so nervous, and once you are out there, it’s awesome!”

Thank you Bend for embracing the mission of the Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show, “transforming trash, inspiring community for a sustainable earth,” and making our community such a great place to live!

Just 4 days Away!

Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show is just 4 days away, and for the 1st time it’s a Saturday night! One of the most engaging events in town, this fundraiser features two eclectic, wearable art (trash fashion) runway shows (one that features local students), our Business Challenge (competing for the Coveted Trash Trophy), a live auction of a select group of runway garments, a silent auction comprised of local sustainable donations, a pop up “marketplace”, featuring sustainable, creative products from local artists, local food and drink.

First Friday Community Garment Creation!

What one action can you take to lower your impact on the planet?

At the end of each year, many of us reflect back on things we accomplished and places we failed, the highlights of the year, and the challenges that loom. The beginning of January marks a new beginning, a time to look forward, not only for ourselves, but for the planet.

Friday, January 3rd, at Outside In, is the Rubbish Renewed First Friday Community Garment Creation! Here you can make public a pledge to walk a little more lightly on the planet. What will you do to generate less waste?  Consume less?  Ask yourself, “What one action can I take to lower my impact on the planet?”

The Community Garment

Come down to Outside In, Friday, January 3rd during Bend’s First Friday event, write your pledge on the garment material that was destined for the landfill.  These pledges will be integral in the creation of the 2020 Community Garment, which will be featured prominently in the 10th annual Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show at The Midtown Ballroom on Saturday, January 25th, 2020.

Make a pledge and/or bring your own cup, and get a chance to win a raffle basket put together by Outside In!
