The biggest way I lessen my impact on the environment is to focus my purchasing power locally. This makes my carbon footprint significantly smaller, especially if I ride my bike or walk to buy it.

Lucky for me, Boneyard Beer is walking distance from my house. An afternoon stroll in the hood often ends in a visit to the tasting room, a hole in the wall in a neighborhood industrial building. A growler only spot, no bottles, no cans, less impact.

Boneyard was started with one goal I mind: Make a great beer! To overcome the hurdle of making large quantities without large sums of money, they forged the brewery from beer rendering rubbish, a perfect fit with our Rubbish Renewed mission.

Lucky for Rubbish Renewed they have supported us since our beginning. Year two, when we ran out of beer, they hurried home to the warehouse and snatched up another keg. All the proceeds benefited REALMS! Thanks Boneyard for your generosity.

This year Boneyard is not only supporting us with beer they are entered in the Business Challenge vying for trash fashion glory! Check out Boneyard Beer at the Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show. It’s local, uses repurposed equipment, and it’s delicious.

Craft-O Holiday Bazaar at The Old Ironworks Arts District – Debris Demolisher

This weekend throngs of discerning holiday shoppers will flood The Old Ironworks Arts District for the third annual Craft-O Holiday Bazaar. This is the perfect opportunity to shop local and support artists in your gift giving this year! The Workhouse, Cindercone Clay Center, Studio 3, Stuarts of Bend and Cement Elegance will all house dedicated artisans and craftsman who have bulked up their locally crafted inventory for our purchasing pleasure. Browse, socialize, snack, and buy on this Saturday and Sunday at Craft-O! As a bonus, Rubbish Renewed will be on hand creating the community garment and offering the first glimpse at this years show!

Stop by the Old Ironworks Arts District not just at Craft-O, but any day. Quickly becoming Bend’s hippest arts district with a collective of artists, makers, and businesses. “Built in 1912 to service Bend’s Lumber Mills and Railroad, The Ironworks Arts District is now home to Cement Elegance, Cindercone Clay Center, Modern Fab, Stuart’s of Bend, The Sparrow Bakery, Studio 3, Sunlight Solar, AND The Workhouse.”

Participating in Rubbish Renewed from the early days, this year The Old Ironworks Arts District is supporting REALMS as a sponsor, competing in the Business Challenge, and will have a spot in our marketplace!

For the past 2 years at the Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show businesses have competed for the Coveted Trash Trophy in our Business Challenge. Panambi Elliott has transported 2 companies to winning the Trophy for her take on Trash Fashion. 2011 Cuppa Yo was the lucky winner squeaking past 5 other socially conscious businesses. 2012 saw the flashing lights of Sounds Fast swish away the trophy competing against 7 others. Transforming trash, inspiring community for a sustainable earth. Some might say this tag line is a little grand for a fashion show motivated by trash creativity. But in fact our goal is to educate, inspire,entertain and take action to help create a more sustainably minded community.

Our first year, when we started planning Rubbish Renewed, we searched for like-minded organizations to collaborate with. We immediately encountered The Bend Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Like us their mission is to engage the community, not just thinking about their impact on the environment, but acting on it.

On Saturday, November 17th, a star-studded cast of garments arrived to Studio 3 to make their debut in front of the lights and cameras. Captured perfectly by Tambi Lane Photography, the garments, designers, and models filled the room and held the audience captive for an entire evening. We hope the innovation and creativity of these designers inspires you to come out next Thursday evening, December 6th to the Century Center, to witness more fantastic fashion in the real show.

The Coveted Trash Trophy

Which business will win the coveted trash trophy this year?

Last December at the Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show, we featured our first ever Business Challenge. 6 businesses showcased their creativity and dedication to sustainability parading their waste along the runway. The competition between ReStore, Wabi Sabi, the Environmental Center, Cuppa Yo, UtilituSEW and the Horned Hand ended in a tight race. In the end Panambi’s vivacious Cuppa Yo piece prevailed to win the first ever coveted trash trophy!

This year we will feature 8 businesses. ReStore and Wabi Sabi return to the competition, with the Workhouse, Spa-W, Barrio, Rescue, Sounds Fast, and Strictly Organic ready for the challenge.

Who will be the winner this year? Come and cast your ballot, it’s the audience who decides.

Business Challenge Winner! | Rubbish Renewed

Congratulations to Panambi Elliott who designed this show-stopping number, right down to the shoes from Cuppa Yo’s waste. Elliott collected discarded yogurt cups and spoons from the trash, hand-cut the waste, and then fashioned it into the fabulous garment shown below. Elliott’s design was one of six “Business Challenge” entries and won the first ever “Business Challenge” Award, decided by an audience vote.
